Organizing Department
UFCW 5’s
Organizing Department is comprised by a group of
talented and dedicated individuals committed to bringing
the benefits of unionism to workers who are currently
without it. Local 5’s organizers are members out of the
stores, plants and fields, community activists and
professional staff.
In 2007 the
department ran several successful campaigns in the dairy
and agricultural industry bringing many workers under
the banner of Local 5. Additionally they built inroads
into the thriving Mercado industry and conducted the
Farmer Joe’s organizing campaign in Oakland, a program
that is ongoing. All of these activities took place
alongside organizing drives in traditional grocery,
warehouse, drug and non-food retail.
2008 will be
another year of intense activity for the department. If
